However, the times they are a- changing. While her parents wished for her to stay in the family home, a shrine in one of the last wooded rural portions of the nation, Shizuko resisted and wished to move to the city. Always a headstrong, if calm and practical, child, only her surprisingly adept learning of the family's more mystical traditions, along with the cajoling of her great aunt, a venerable and heavy-set Chinese woman named Tsao, made it possible. Having learned all her parents were willing to teach her, Shizuko moved to Tokyo at the age of 15. She adapted to her new life quite well, though Tsao insisted that she keep up her spiritual training. Mariel Trillia Celine du Mariee Hesse is a different story. An English noblewoman of the Tudor era, she was a hedonist and grand dame of the highest order. Concerned only with indulging her whims from moment to moment, she went from being a spoiled child to an attractive vamp as she grew older. Impressed by her self-centered and reckless abandon, another noble by the name of Ryan Penn, a vampire, offered her a place in the supernatural hierarchy to indulge her whims forever. Intrigued by the concept of immortality in which to have fun and kick back, she readily agreed. Ryan, pleased to be getting what he presumed would be a new servant, bade her to visit him in a week for the ritual. She arrived one week later as promised, and was infused with demonic power to become a succubus. Ryan, eager to be pleased by his new 'slave', was instead staked directly through the heart by his new pet. She drank sherry on the balcony with his severed head on the table, amusingly watching the sunrise. She lived as a succubus for uncounted years, using her powers to disguise herself when necessary and secure a vast fortune for herself over the many years. Travelling the globe, she revelled in the pleasures of the flesh until eventually they began to bore her. In the late 1900's, she settled down in Asia and began work as a 'supernatural detective'. Taking up firearms and breaking and entering as a matter of course, Mariel used her unique talents to help ferret out those supernaturals who took "culling the herd" a little too far. To her, it wasn't really altruism; it was a matter of making sure that her existence as a supernatural being wasn't compromised. It worked out fairly well; people with the right knowledge and the right connections found her, and she solved their problems... for a fee that allowed her to live comfortably. Their stories meet in Japan. Mariel, bored and vacationing, visited Tokyo on a whim. However, while there she was attacked and captured by a young, over-zealous demon hunter who didn't know her character had become, over the years, less than evil. His master intervened at the last moment, and prevented Mariel from being wholly destroyed. Instead, her spiritual essence was trapped in a statue of a beautiful woman in Ueno Park. Her body destroyed, Mariel was cursed to inhabit the statue forever. Around the same time, Shizuko had recently graduated from high school at the age of 17, one year early. Concerned with her aunt Tsao's then-failing health, she decided to delay her university applications for a year to take care of her. Tsao, bedridden most of the day, revealed to her niece the reason she brought her to Tokyo. A practitioner of ancient Chinese sorceries rather than a Shintoist like her sister, Tsao had spent a number of years as an operative of Interpol's SIU. However, her last mission had involved a particularly nasty spiritual being who had cursed Tsao to an early death, the 'date' of which was soon approaching. She saw in Shizuko the ability to carry on her work, using the 'rural' supernatural talent she possessed to help the big city where she longed to be. Shizuko was introduced to the SIU separately from Mystery Club, instead directly to Interpol via Tsao. Although her fighting ability was not the best, Shizuko's intelligence, will, and supernatural abilities made her a shoe-in for the unit. Classified as an attaché/consultant, she was called in by various SIU operatives for her specific expertise. One such instance was the 'haunting' of the newly-erected bronze statue of the sun goddess, Amaterasu, in Ueno Park. Accompanying a lone male agent named Sho to the park, Shizuko encountered the wailing spirit of a beautiful woman, surrounding the statue. Although it was clearly supernatural, Shizuko didn't necessarily sense malice from the ghost. She prepared to exorcise it completely, but was interrupted by a gurgling sound: the noise of her partner being stabbed through the throat by a sword-wielding tengu. Mariel, trapped in the statue, had noticed that reneged tengu, thirsting for human blood, had been hunting the new statue at night, as it had become a haven for new lovers. Manifesting as best she could, she attempted to be a "wailing ghost" to both warn away others and attract attention. Sadly, the attention had just been stabbed through the neck, and two of the raven-men were advancing on the other. Summoning her abilities as best she could, Mariel manifested to Shizuko, who had been stunned with fear, promising her survival if she agreed to share her body with her. Although she resisted, Shizuko gave in, more concerned with survival than anything else. Entering the miko's body, Mariel 'took over'; Shizuko's rather plain (some would say cute) body became Mariel's tall curvy Western features. Mariel's wings sprang from the small of her lower back. And in one smooth motion Mariel drew two guns from seemingly nowhere and quite cleanly blew a number of rather inconvenient holes in the attacking tengu. Mariel, thrilled at having a body again, used her illusion powers to cloak her wings and tripped the life fantastic. She had no money but she quite clearly didn't need it; all her drinks and rides were free with the right amount of applied charm. But when she woke up the next morning in a hotel room... well, she wasn't herself. In fact, she was Shizuko, and she had no real control over the body she'd just possessed. It was a bit like being back in the statue. Shizuko, who had been waiting for control of her body to return, rushed home with all possible speed before she could be discovered. Thus began a rocky first few days. In the beginning, there was no way to shift forms, except at sunup and sundown; in time, both Mariel and Shizuko learned that if it was needed, and they focused their will strongly enough, it was possible to change back and forth during the day, but only for a limited amount of time. Mariel's succubus powers were limited while she inhabited Shizuko's body, but she was still able to manifest some of her abilities. It was an odd partnership at first. While they adjusted to being two souls in one body, there was constant bickering; Mariel's more selfish and free- wheeling nature clashed with Shizuko's calm and serious personality. However, over time Shizuko learned to 'sleep' while Mariel is in control, and vice versa. When she returned to SIU duty, only her most superior officer knows her secret, and she has been assigned detail unique to her abilities. Thus, in a sense, both Shizuko and Mariel now serve the SIU in their own ways. Both women have an uneasy truce about their shared body, but they both understand that without the other neither is really complete. Mariel, for herself, continually searches for a way to get her own body back and become a whole being once again.
