They worked for a secret supernatural policing initiative in another dimension, and being hedonist types they fooled around a little bit. Only the gun bunny what got sucked into another dimension somehow, and ended up in what we call the "ATCverse". Only she was pregnant, see, and that really just Would Not Work. Maternal instincts were the only thing keeping her from ditching it in a back alley or having it aborted, but she wasn't ready to raise a child in a world she knew little about. Thus, she left the child with nothing but a name (Marcus McLochlane) on the doorstep of an orphanage in Antakya, Turkey. She then left Earth and never came back, and here exits our story. Instead we'll focus on Marcus, who grew up to the age of 12 in the orphanage on the Mediterranean coast. It wasn't exactly a "Great Expectations" affair; while he had only minimal schooling and didn't live a rich life, it was comfortable, and he had good friends. Although the church running the orphanage had long since faded into obscurity they had a standing tradition of teaching kids to work with their hands to create things. Marcus, for his part, appeared to be a *really good cook*, specifically a baker. When he left the orphanage he found a local cafe and studied under the chef there, an old man who remembered what it was like to work with his hands as well. Long story short, Marcus moved to Mars and became a famous pastissier (he was particularly good at baklava). He married a nice girl and they settled down in Red Sweden to live out their lives. A fairly boring story. They had a son named Kristof, who they trained in the art of baking. Of course, he also had a talent for electrical engineering, which Marcus encouraged. The son managed to get a good job working for DunnoCorp in their projects and design division, where he met a young woman named Annemarie Michaels and married her. They were soon headhunted by Andressen Tofu Corp and moved to Red San Francisco. Kristof and Annemarie thus begat Soma (given his name because Annemarie had what she considered a prophetic dream right before he was conceived). A naturally bright child, he was encouraged to learn all that he could by his parents, who loved him very much but were terribly busy with their work. The relationship was strained even further when young Soma was determined to be a natural genius not only with engineering and mechanics, but also in a number of other fields, including the social sciences. Pressed into ATC's headstart scholar program, he was moved to Red Atlanta and continued to study there until he left the accelerated program with a bachelor's degree in history at age 19. Surprisingly articulate and personable (at least compared to his classmates, many of whom would go on to more hard scientific pursuits and even a few who would eventually become researchers at SIG-ASP), Soma was well-liked by his classmates. He was active in extra-curricular activities on a staggering scale given his courseload, studying the theatre, the sciences, sociology, and archaeology. He was especially fond of holographic interactive video games, particularly those with "ancient" settings. He found -- somewhat to his own surprise -- that he was an *excellent* natural shot, and took to target shooting to complement the wargames to develop his skills. Even more interesting was his rather... unique introduction to his 24 power, which didn't come until particularly late in life for him considering he was a first generation 24. During a particularly nasty drunken frat weekend (he was very big with the hedonist set) Soma lost a game of strip poker with the caveat that he had to run through the university quad naked. Which went swimmingly until a policeman wandered through the area. Ducking behind a tree he wished fervently for some clothes, ANYTHING to get out of the predicament... and was rewarded with some that popped out of thin air. The policeman did wonder why he was wearing a sunflower-print minidress with matching yellow pumps, but it was better than a public indecency charge. He was thankfully safe in his room when, an hour later, the clothes disappeared. He then applied to mastering that talent all the prodigious effort and intelligence he had to other aspects of his career. Deciding that he rather liked the study of history, he stayed on for another 3 years at Red New York University in their prestigious cultural history department, earning a pair of master's degrees by the time he was 22. However, by then he had totally lost touch with his parents, who -- dissatisfied with corporate life -- had sold their holdings in Red San Fran and moved to Red Montreal to open a bakery, hearkening back to his roots (or perhaps more accurately, what he believed to be his roots). Although he had many inviting offers from academics around Mars (and even Earth) to move into academia and earn his PhD, Soma instead decided to get his own home in Red San Francisco and think about how to use what he'd learned in a way that made him happy. His interest in history stemmed from a longtime relationship with his grandfather, who frequently called Soma while he was in school to check up on him (even when Kristof did not). Marcus often talked about his early memories from Turkey and not knowing who his family truly was, and always regretting that the only legacy he could share with his son and grandson was what was made with his own two hands. Soma, whose distant relationship with his parents resonated with that, also became interested in sudden shifts in cultures, in families, and in lives. One thing that fascinated Soma -- perhaps due to his love of video gaming -- had been civilizations that lived on in cultural memory as fantastic, even magical. Legends of Thule, Atlantis, and the unexplained of Earth's history vied with the many mythical tales of pre-colonization Mars and the possible civilizations that once lived there. Of course, there were more prosaic things to consider, but in general, the idea of cultural transformation interested Soma, particularly as a 24 living in the age where 24s were slowly changing human civilization. The reversal of fortune came in the form of his grandfather Marcus' untimely death shortly after Soma's graduation. What neither Soma nor Kristof knew was that Marcus' many years of frugal living and consistent business had left him richer than anyone would have imagined a pastissier could be. Most of the estate went to Kristof... who promptly signed it over to his son. Shocked, but suddenly rich, Soma was free to do whatever he wanted. And what he wanted to do was explore. Forming a small group of like-minded individuals that would eventually become his support staff, Soma set about actually seeking out relics of the past, looking for the loose thread that ties civilization together. It was not so much a search for a 'grand unified theory' as it was looking for a connection... the same thing his grandfather had been for all the years he had known him. Perhaps in tracking human history, Soma felt, he could honor his grandfather's wishes. It was an old college friend who had moved on to Platinum Ridge who suggested one year that Soma document his adventures -- which were already a hit as stories he told at social functions -- into scripts for make into movies. Soma took the idea and ran it one better: getting a specially-crafted TSM jack and some very expensive equipment, he engineered the creation of a TSM POV-show that documented what went on *as it actually happened*. Combining third and first-person footage, the show, called "Under the Moon", became an instant hit with many Martian and Earth people who, enjoying the renewed tide of Romanticism, enjoyed the vicarious thrill of Soma's exciting and, occasionally, not-entirely-legal foray into extreme archaeology. The informal group of assistants, hangers-on, and technicians stayed on to create an old-style "production house" (named She Chose Poorly Productions, in a nod to an old Indiana Jones film) that served up the indie content as pay-per-view. Becoming a bit of a minor celebrity in the span of a few short months (and making a nice chunk of change with which to bankroll the continued operation of She Chose Poorly), Soma now continues his work on Under the Moon, using the "off-season" time to continue research and find more opportunities for the show. [Physical description -- Not terribly tall (5'11"); keeps in shape but is more "rugby player" athletic than "bishounen trim". He's heterochromatic; his right eye is sapphire blue and his left eye is a dark green. He keeps his hair cut short, and it's dark black, but he dyes it silvery-white at the tips (kind of like Hatsuharu from Fruits Basket, but in reverse). He usually goes clean-shaven and has very angular features. Standard dress is a white cotton long-sleeved ribbed-cut shirt, black leather pants, and black and silver sneakers. If he's carrying guns like normal, he wears a pair of holsters across his waist just under the small of his back rather than against his hips and draws them crosswise.
