It is a harsh but fair code centered around the justice of the moment. She is charged to protect the defenseless and defeat the unjust and impious. * - Jade Necklace: Xian's ability to channel the Four Elemental Spirits is dependent on a jade necklace she wears. The jade is not irreplaceable (any common jade enhanced with a correct ritual will do), but without it she cannot summon the mystical energies of the Four Gods. Her Healing and Astral Projection abilities are unchanged. * - Chinese Symbols: As a former Tong assassin, Xian was marked by her former employers. Moreso, as she developed as a Taoist shaman, she was further marked. A band of symbols reading "Let he who defies his betters meet death at my hands" is tattooed around her neck. On the back of her left hand is the symbol for "Fire" in red; on the back of her right, "Metal" in outlined white; on her left breast, "Wood" in blue, on her right breast, "Water" in black, and on her forehead, "Jade" in green. These last five glow whenever she uses a magical power. * - Former Assassin: Xian was formerly, as a child, an assassian for the Black Scarves Tong of southern China. She hides the information because her face is still known in southeast Asian as their assassin, with the blood of many on her hands. A white tiger's tail (decoration only) extends from her back, her canines elongate, and small claws extend from her fingernails. Although this form does not seem as powerful as the others, it can be held much longer and enhances Xian's considerable martial arts skill to a brutal level. Background: Xian Gan Feng was originally the daughter of simple rice farmers in the desolate, abandoned inland areas around the Riverlands area of southern China. She was born in the year of the Tiger, on an auspicious day devoted to Yu Ti, the Personage of Jade who directed Pan Ku's creation. The first sights and sounds she heard were festival celebrations. Thus her parents nicknamed her "Tianyi", or "Heaven's Joy", for her cries turned to laughter soon in the throng of partiers. Unfortunately, with the disasters striking China in the period, even simple rice farming was not enough. Money was needed, and the only way to get it was through the various criminal elements of southeast Asia, the Tongs, Triads, and Yakuza who drifted through the countries, controlling through fear and intimidation the peasantry who'd tilled the land for centuries. Xian's family, unable to support even themselves, gave their child to a Tong known for their wealth, the Black Scarves. "She is born under an auspicious sign," they told the gang. "She will bring you luck." The child was spirited away to Hong Kong, and the family given a sizeable sum of money. It did them no good; stricken with grief and sorrow over their decision, Xian's parents killed themselves the very next day, hoping their sacrifice would atone for Xian's future crimes. Whether or not their wishes came true is up for debate. Raised by the Tong, Xian displayed immense athletic and mental gifts. They formed her into a martial artist with few equals, indoctrinating her in their own killing methods and combat style. Dubbed "Lotus", by the age of 15 Xian was sent to eliminate those recalcitrant and foolish people who did not realize that an assassin could hide in the shape of a teenage girl. The turning point in Xian's life came when she was required to kill an old Taoist monk named Zhang Zilong who lived alone in an abandoned dojo in Black Scarves turf in Hong Kong. She was sent in as normal, and found that her killing methods were completely ineffective against the old man's seemingly effortless martial arts. Defeated, she took a sword from the dojo wall and begged that the monk kill her mercifully and quickly, rather than submit to the Tong's mercy. Instead, Zilong looked into her eyes and said: "I can see the flame of hope burning behind the dead eyes given to you wrongfully. You will stay with me." And she did. After the Scarves lost ten men trying to retrieve her from Zilong, neither were bothered by them again. Studying the Tao and the ways of Chinese mysticism fro her mentor for a half year, Xian was then sent to a remote monastery at Da Lian in central China. There the monks welcomed her and began to work on the final stages of her rehabilitation. Where Zilong had opened her mind to the mysteries of the universe, it was the monks at Da Lian who taught her the ways of the shaman, to course those energies through herself and be empowered by the spirits of the land. Thus she completed her training. However, deep inside she knew only a deep well that could not be filled. Taking nothing with her but clothes and a small amount of money, Xian has since travelled the world in search of worthy opponents, the opportunity to right her wrongs, and something to fill up the space that her tragic past created inside.
