I can only assume you are using the romanji translation of the incantation that QP provided on her website (http://www07.u-page.so-net.ne.jp/da2/qpdiana/romaji.html#Recovery), so in the interest of completeness I'll also refer to it; however, it should be noted those incantations are based on the novels, not the anime. In episode 25, when Sylphiel uses the unidentified healing spell on Lina, she gives the exact same chant that is listed on QP's page, and the translation is as Nadelman's in the subtitled version (what's listed under Recovery on inverse.org's spellbook -- http://www.inverse.org/e/bkg/magic/sp12.shtml#recovery). However, when she completes the spell, she does not *say* the trigger Chaos Word, so there is no way to know, in fact, what spell she's casting at all. However, in episode 26 when Sylphiel uses Recovery to regrow Flagoon, the exact same chant is used, right down to the very same translation. However, in *this* instance, Sylphiel *does* say the final Chaos Word to trigger the spell, and that word is "Recovery!", not "Resurrection!". Insofar as the logic goes, it's more reasonable to assume that the spell which is explicitly defined as Recovery is the 'correct' version in context of the anime. The spells work quite differently. Recovery accelerates the natural healing process; Resurrection uses magical energy to heal instead and is thus safe to use on people who are close to death. While Lina *is* close to death in episode 25, Sylphiel also sues CPR on her and quotes, before starting her spell, that "It's not too late". Considering Sylphiel's white magic power is so far beyond anyone else's, it's very possible what she cast at that point is, in fact, Recovery and not Resurrection. Since she doesn't say the spell's name, we have no way of ever truly knowing. The trouble here is that, past Slayers TV, the chants for Recovery and Resurrection are never used again. Thus these instances are the only ones we have to draw from for a chant to put in the spellbook. The inverse.org spellbook, at the very least, draws more heavily from the anime than the novels, since 1.) the major maintainers don't have access to the physical books, 2.) sources like the Encyclopedia Slayers are often contradictory with other Slayers books on the issue, and 3.) One of us doesn't read Japanese. If you have any examples of the spell chants being used in full in Slayers Next or Slayers Try, feel free to give me episode numbers and approximate times; I have the DVDs for all three seasons and will be quite pleased to do the research on it. So, in closing: No, we did not use the wrong chant. the only time Recovery is chanted in full, that chant is used. QP's romanji translations are based on the novels, not the anime, and thus comparing the two is irrelevant. Insofar as the implication that I do not like the series enough to care about the error, or that I am "not a big enough fan" to know the difference, it is my sincere hope that the breadth of this response will convince you otherwise. Have a nice day. >Todd Harper (lina@inverse.org) On Sun, 22 Dec 2002, Jesse Langham wrote: > Ok I read your disclamer, and this seems to be a major error to me.
